Route 66 Centennial 2026 Events Calendar — 100th Anniversary Guide | Route 66 Travel Info

Route 66 turns 100 on November 11, 2026. The anniversary is being celebrated with a year-long program of events, preservation projects, and festivals across all eight Route 66 states — the largest coordinated celebration in the highway’s history. Congress authorized a dedicated Route 66 Centennial Commission to coordinate events nationally, and every state from Illinois to California has its own commission, budget, and lineup of events.

If you’ve ever wanted to drive Route 66, 2026 is the year to do it. Towns that have been quietly preserving their neon signs and vintage motor courts for decades are throwing open their doors for the centennial. Classic car rallies, community festivals, and coast-to-coast caravans are happening every month from January through November. And the surge in travelers means you need to book accommodations now — the best historic Route 66 lodges are already filling up.

This guide covers the major confirmed centennial events in every Route 66 state, the three key national dates you won’t want to miss, and practical tips for planning your centennial road trip.

📅 Event information disclaimer: Event dates and details are subject to change. Always verify current information at the official centennial calendar: Route66Centennial.org. This page was last updated April 2026.

The 3 Key National Centennial Dates

While centennial events are happening every month throughout 2026, three dates stand above the rest. If you’re planning your trip around the celebration, build your itinerary around these.

April 30, 2026 — National Centennial Kickoff Day

Simultaneous opening ceremonies take place in Joliet, ILSpringfield, MOSanta Monica, CA; and communities in every Route 66 state. This marks 100 years since the highway received its official number designation. Events include concerts, car shows, parades, and community celebrations from the eastern terminus in Chicago to the Pacific Ocean. Think of it as the starting gun for the entire centennial year.

June 5–24, 2026 — Main Street of America Centennial Caravan

The signature moving event of the centennial — a coast-to-coast caravan organized by the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership, traveling from Santa Monica Pier all the way to Chicago. One representative from all 50 states participates, plus international participants. The caravan is open to the public to join along any stretch. This is the event that captures the true spirit of what Route 66 has always meant: people from everywhere, traveling together, westward.

November 11, 2026 — The 100th Anniversary

The exact date of Route 66’s establishment in 1926. Culminating events are planned in Springfield, ILTulsa, OK (Route 66 Birthday Bash + Veterans Day Parade at Cain’s Ballroom); and communities across all 8 states. This is the grand finale of the centennial year — 100 years to the day from when the highway was first designated.

⚠️ Book early — this is not optional in 2026. The three dates above will see the highest demand for accommodations in Route 66’s 100-year history. Classic motor courts, wigwam motels, and historic lodges near major event hubs are already booking out. If you’re planning to attend any of the marquee events, secure your rooms now.

National Historic Trail Designation Campaign

Centennial Preservation Grant Program

Planning Your 2026 Centennial Road Trip

The centennial creates some unique planning considerations compared to a normal Route 66 road trip. Here’s what you need to know before you book.

Book Accommodations Now

This is not optional in 2026. Classic motor courts, wigwam motels, and historic lodges near major event hubs are already filling up. The Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari has 14 rooms. The Wigwam Motel in Holbrook has 15 teepee units. The Wagon Wheel in Cuba, Missouri (the oldest operating motel on Route 66) has been booked months in advance. If you want the authentic Route 66 lodging experience during the centennial year, secure your rooms well ahead of your travel dates.

Best Travel Windows

Spring (April–May) and Fall (September–October) offer ideal weather across most of the route and align with the biggest centennial events. Avoid midsummer in the Texas Panhandle and Arizona desert — temperatures regularly hit 105°F+. Winter in Illinois and Missouri brings snow risk and seasonal closures at some attractions.

How Long Do You Need?

  • 14 days — the recommended minimum for the full Chicago-to-Santa Monica drive at a comfortable pace. See our complete 14-day Route 66 itinerary.
  • 7 days — possible with interstate use on the longer sections; best for highlights. See our 7-day Route 66 itinerary.
  • 21 days — the leisurely, don’t-miss-anything version. Ideal for retirees, international visitors, and anyone for whom this is a bucket-list trip.

Navigation Tips

Your phone GPS will route you onto I-40 at every opportunity. Don’t follow it blindly. The EZ66 Guide for Travelers by Jerry McClanahan is the gold standard for navigating historic alignments — get your copy on Amazon. Many stretches have brown “Historic Route 66” signs — follow these whenever they appear.

Fuel Planning

Never let your tank drop below half in Arizona and New Mexico. Gaps of 50–80 miles between gas stations exist on historic alignments. In the deep Mojave between Amboy and Barstow, fill up whenever you see a station. Fuel is cheapest in Texas and Oklahoma; most expensive in California.
